Viva Pit Senyor: A Celebration of Culture
What is Sinulog Festival in Cebu City?
From its roots in the 16th century when Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan gifted an image of the Santo Niño to Queen Consort Hara Humamay, the Sinulog Festival in Cebu City is a grand celebration signaling the arrival of Christianity in the country and honoring the Santo Niño, or the Child Jesus. It is celebrated every January, where the streets come alive with colorful parades, rhythmic drumbeats, and the traditional “two steps forward, one step backward” dance mimicking water flow, blending pre-colonial rituals with Christian devotion.
Iloilo City’s Dinagyang Festival History
Also celebrated every January is the Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo City. This exciting festival began in 1972 as a street dance competition honoring the Child Jesus. Its name comes from the Hiligaynon word “dinalay-dagyang,” symbolizing the joy and celebration of the community's devotion. The Dinagyang festival is famous for the Ati tribes competition, cultural performances, elaborate costumes and masks, and dazzling displays of creativity attracting thousands of spectators every year.
